Messiah
Lovely portrait of Der Handelmeister, wot? Nice 'do', Georgie boy.
Tonight it begins. The first rehearsal with the orchestra. 125 people (give or take) and some very large musical instruments crammed into a 75-person capacity room, rehearsing Baroque (so don't fix it) music for several hours. Oh joy, oh bliss! Rehearsals every night this week, the rest all at the Basilica (lots of room there!), with performances on Friday and Saturday night. It is indeed the most wonderful time of the year.
So, my lovely readers, (all 3 of you -a few more if we count the lurkers - I love you, lurkers!) I may be unblogged for the next few days. But I will be smiling like an eejit the while.

We've had fabulous rehearsals! Last night at the Basilica for the first time.

Lucky you. I've always wished I was in a good enough choir to perform Messiah. And wished even more I was good enough to be the soloist in the part that goes "rejoice, rejoice, rejoice greatly oh daughter of Jerusalem." That is one awesome piece.
For that matter, I wish we had a choir here in Hay River at all that I could join and sing some decent classical music.
You know, I feel very lucky to be involved with this choir. We had two fantastic performances this weekend. There's an amazing amount of musical talent in this city and lots of choirs to participate in.
Are there any music teachers in Hay River? Maybe you could get a choir started...
There isn't really anything in Hay River. I'm not even sure where kids get their piano instruction. The schools and churches have choirs but that's not what I want to do. And really the musical tastes do not run to classical music. I don't know how we'd even try and start any kind of quality choir when we don't have anyone of any caliber to be our music director. (Certainly not me, I sang tolerably well in my choir days but I wouldn't know how to run it.)
Call the schools and churchs and ask to speak to the music teacher/choir director. Just because someone is a choir director at a church doesn't mean they wouldn't be interested in a secular choir outside of their regular choir. ?What kind of music do you want to do? You never know what interest might be out there. Good luck!
Oh, keep me posted hawkowl, okay?
I would have to say baroque music is my favourite but anything up to the late classical period probably works for me, especially sacred music and cute Renaissance ditties. I also love Gregorian chant but that's another kettle of fish... I'd like to see the day Hay River is famous for its Gregorian chant! And a bit of folk music now and then is always fun. Anything non-modern, basically! Anyway thanks for the tip, I think I will try the school music teachers and see what they can do. And I will keep you posted. :)
You're the 2nd person in the last few weeks to tell me they liked Gregorian chant. I thought I was a freak.
