Blinded by the light...

Two of the people listed in my links have been "dooced" this year. Petite Anglaise in April (although she just recently felt safe disclosing it) and more recently Pointless Drivel.

I have just finished scanning my entire blog (talk about pointless drivel) looking for anything incriminating. I didn't see anything, but then I didn't see anything damning on their blogs, either.

I rarely refer to my job here. I like my job, the people I work with and the people we work for, so the likelihood of me saying anything fire-worthy should be pretty slim. But just in case, if you ever see anything you think is going to get me in trouble, you'll let me know, right?

Let the paranoia begin.

The simple fact someone is blogging from their work place, using company bandwidth can be cause for a person to be dooced. Add to that the fact that if someone is blogging the work is not getting done.

Bryn - I have a friend who says, "I like to believe I AM paranoid. Otherwise, those nasty things people say about me would be true."

dcver - True, true and true. Personal blogging is unlikely to be in anyone's job description.

However, we have a sort of "3 strikes and you're out" rule in Canada. If an employee whose performance is otherwise acceptable (and having kept them on the payroll for several years is often interpreted by the courts as proof of acceptable performance) is found to be doing something wrong, but not heinous (such as embezzelment) they are usually given 2 verbal warnings and one in writing before they are dismissed. Any less is to invite a lawsuit for wrongful dismissal. Of course, if an employer has a written policy expressing forbidding such behaviour... you are out of luck.

Which is the most hazardous I wonder - the work place or family?

Nope. Can't find anything dodgy, I reckon you're safe :)

I reckon I'm safe from getting 'dooced' as well. No immediate family or job working for someone else helps, mind.

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

From the words of the immortal Dooce herself:

"I started this website in February 2001. A year later I was fired from my job for this website because I had written stories that included people in my workplace. My advice to you is BE YE NOT SO STUPID. Never write about work on the internet unless your boss knows and sanctions the fact that YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT WORK ON THE INTERNET."

That sums it up I think.

Yep. Which is why I never write about work on the internet.

And hello, you.
